More About TEDx RAKA

At the upcoming TEDx RAKA event, I will deliver an official talk titled “LEGO: More Than Building Blocks.” The talk will explore how competitive robotics and trial-and-error assembly can transform simple childhood curiosity into practical, real-world engineering skills.

The presentation will explore the technical and psychological principles behind engineering through three key ideas:

• Engineering Without Instructions: Exploring how building models without step-by-step manuals or structural adhesives encourages authentic problem-solving, creativity, and architectural intuition.
• The Prototyping Cycle: Examining the continuous process of testing, coding, and structural modification used in competitive environments such as the FIRST LEGO League to overcome mechanical limitations.
• Scaling Up Complexity: Highlighting industrial engineering examples, including life-sized, functional LEGO-built iterations of cars such as the Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear and McLaren P1, to demonstrate how the principles behind basic construction can translate into real-world automotive engineering.

The talk aims to challenge the way we view simple construction toys, highlighting their potential to develop three essential traits in future engineers:

• Patience: Learning to navigate errors and structural instability through repeated testing and iteration.
• Curiosity: Questioning why a mechanical system or robotic program fails to work as intended.
• Complex Problem-Solving: Learning to see individual components not simply as toys, but as building blocks for future technological innovation.
